Longing for Cooler Weather
August 16, 2009 § 3 Comments
As the Arizona heat continues to trap me on the treadmill for my runs, I can’t help but pine for cooler days so I can get back to hitting the pavement. For me, running on the treadmill is a necessary evil and I force myself a few times a week to stop by the gym and run at least 3 or 4 miles so I can maintain a decent endurance level. But it’s not the same as being able to lace up and find new routes to run, adjust my speed quicker than the buttons on the treadmill will allow me to, and take in the scenery instead of staring at a wall or TV.
I guess I should consider myself fortunate that I can afford a gym membership just so I can run during the summer. I’ve tried the whole get-up-at-5am-to-run-before-work-to-beat-the-heat but after being chased by dogs and almost falling asleep at work numerous times, I knew that wasn’t going to work for me. I’m more of an afternoon/evening runner. I find it’s a great way to unwind from the day and focus on nothing but my running.
Today, just like yesterday, I’ll head to the gym to face my nemesis. Soon, dear treadmill, you will be left in the dust of the local canal paths and the beautiful fall weather. Until then, I will humbly join my fellow runners in embarking on runs that have no beginning and no end – just an endless rubber track that keep going, and going, and going…
