Myth Busted: All Thin People Are Just “Lucky”

June 23rd, 2010 § 3 Comments

I was in the break room at work heating up my lunch and one of my co-workers started eye-balling my meal. It’s nothing exciting: half a can of high fiber Chicken Tuscan soup (Progresso), a cup of fresh blueberries and a serving of multigrain chips (The Whole Earth, Spicy Nacho). She then proceeded to tell me that she has heard so many people say something about how lucky other people are to be thin and when she looks at me and then sees what I eat for lunch on a regular basis, she better understands the meaning of “you are what you eat”. It was like a lightbulb went on in her head and revealed to her the misconceptions that all thin people are just naturally thin.

I took this as a compliment because I make a real effort to eat well and in moderation, and, of course, to work out. I can tell a difference if I start eating out for most of my meals or if I buy food at the store that isn’t quite as healthy (like some of the frozen meals out there which are downright scary!). There has to be a balance between working out and eating right and that takes work. If I can lead by example by eating a healthy lunch, then bring it on! I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing and hope that other people see the light like my co-worker did today.

Finding Inspiration in Others

June 13th, 2010 § 2 Comments

We encounter so many people in our lives that just come and go, but occasionally there are a few that can make an impact. I got a note from my aunt today who said that she reads my dinner posts and running blogs and found inspiration in what I am doing. I guess I never really thought that what I do could inspire others, so I am very flattered. Then I got to thinking – who inspires me?

My husband
I don’t care how corny it sounds, my husband is the most steady source of inspiration in my life. Day in and day out he’s there for me with his calming presence and sound advice. He is a very smart man and is so personable. He never fails to make me feel special and is always there to make me laugh. He inspires me to remember that life isn’t always about the serious stuff – you can let go and have fun!

My trainer
A few years ago I found an ad for a personal trainer. Even though my husband and I were somewhat active at the time, we needed a swift kick in the butt to bring it up a notch. Enter Jerrod with StrengthLab. Jerrod’s energy and enthusiasm for all things fitness and health was just what I needed to get me going. With his help and encouragement, he inspired me to start running more. Two and a half years later, I’ve run a half marathon, a full marathon and countless other smaller races. Twice a week he continues to inspire me to stay in shape and live a healthy lifestyle.

My cats
Yep, my cats inspire me. Even though they can’t talk to me in words I understand, they communicate with me. They inspire me to be a good “parent”. They rely on me for food, attention, play and discipline (my weak point). They also inspire me to chill out and enjoy the simpler things in life.

There are so many others who inspire me: my sisters, my boss, some of the running tweeps I follow…the list goes on. Inspiration is a great source of helping me to expand my boundaries and continue to grow. Who inspires you?

Where Am I?
